This is not a purely subjective empathy but a methodical and regulated ‘‘critical thinking’’. The past is re-enacted and rethought under strict guidelines of coherence. Each datum must make sense in context. It must fit coherently into the emerging picture, as the mosaic tile must contribute to a discernable image. Individual actions must make sense to us, but to us immersed in the context of the past. In this way, the actions must make sense to the actors at the time, and it is this coherence that allows us to say we understand the actors.

Then the auxiliary theories were questioned. Perhaps we don’t understand neutrinos as well as we thought. Maybe they are produced in the fusion events in the sun’s core, but they are trapped in there. Maybe they somehow get steered away from the earth. Maybe there are different kinds of neutrinos, all of which are streaming to the earth but only one of which interacts with chlorine. This last suggestion is the one that eventually saved the day. Revised (auxiliary) theory now says that there are three kinds of neutrinos, but the chlorine detector is only able to capture one kind.

Chapter 4 The Network of Knowledge Abstract Scientific method must involve a broad view of lots of different ideas. A theory is judged by its relation to many different observations and many other theories. Scientific knowledge must be a coherent network of statements, both empirical and theoretical. No piecemeal or isolated view of single theories and single experiments can do justice to the scientific method. Keywords Coherence Á Expertise No single test, no single piece of evidence, can confirm or disconfirm a hypothesis.
