In an Address to the Special Political Committee of the UN General Assembly in 1961, Nigeria’s Foreign Minister reiterated the country’s position on the issue of decolonization and racial discrimination, and said, “The independence of African states will be meaningless, if in other parts of African continent black men did not have freedom.

This has been clearly demonstrated by the various diplomatic offensives launched against the white minority regime in South Africa in different international fora, and particularly at the African Union, the Commonwealth, Non-Aligned Movement, and the United Nations. 85 Nigeria’s anti-apartheid policies were informed by the inhuman and unjust apartheid policy, and its criminal acts against the black majority population of South Africa.
