The conventions only serve to remind me that behind or even within the costume, an actual event is taking place: the actors are acting in a play- whatever that might mean-that is, in the real, in perception/ memory, necessarily occurring someplace else. Moreover, the displace- ment of realism as a genre by "nonmimetic" modes,28 far from rejecting the ethos of realism, re-creates it. All performance, I would argue, is representative; all is, in the richest sense of the word, mimetic.
