FITZMYER (The Contribution of Qumran Aramaie to the Study of the New Testament, NTS 20 [1974] 382-407), e. , lists the following similarities with Qumranic sourees: cognate accu, sative, avaa't'a~ + verb, indefinite third person plural for passive (401), Ev aAlj8ELc;X, EJt'aAlj8E(a~ (400), the titles (0) KUQLO~ (386-91) and son of God (391-94). DALMAN. 138 On weH over a dozen bases,139 W ELLHAUSEN detected a strong Aramaic flavoring in the s y n tax and sty le of the Synoptics. 140 DALMAN, by contrast, concerning hirns elf chiefly with vocabulary,141 discovered Aramaic influence in the NT's major concepts. 142 Later, C. C. TORREY, on the basis of syntactical evidence 143 and conjectured "mistranslations" ,144 noted "the very noticeable Semitic coloring"14S of the first half of the book of Acts - a coloring which he clearly understood to be Aramaic, not Hebrew 146 - and subsequent research convinced hirn that these same qualities were present both in the Gospels 147 and in the Apocalypse.

4; TURNER, Papyrus Finds, 45. See WILCOX, Semitisms, 180, 183. The reason for this two-fold change is not hard to find. To a large extent, the evidence for a specific type of Semitism is, as BEYER and BLACK have contended (see below, and notes 180 and 181), ambiguous. And this has long been recognized (see, e. , WELLHAUSEN, Einleitung, 34 and 18-9, 22, 31-2; DALMAN, Words of Jesus, 18-42). Therefore, many Semitisms can be classed as Aramaisms, only if Aramaic is the basic, if not the sole, Semitic influence upon a given writer or speaker.
